Think of the ASTR (pronounced ASToR not ASTRa) as the Ridley FALCN of gravel.
If you are looking for an absolute out and out aero gravel racebike, then you have come to the right place (albeit the slightly less aero version).
It’s climbing bike levels of weight, with the all the aero features of a FALCN RS but taking 52mm tyres on a 700c wheel and like the Falcn is to the Falcn RS then the ASTR is to the ASTR RS.
It is a (little) heavier, less diffuser touches around the frame and uses a classic round seatpost, rather than the aero found on the ASTR RS, but that’s it!
Just BONKERS! –
Is it any good…?
Ridley were the people who pretty much invented the modern CX race bike, the first aero gravel bike…so
- a pre production version podiumed at this years UNBOUND 200 2024, with Piotr Havik coming 4th (1 second behind 3rd) having had the new bike for just 10 days before hand…
- furthermore Annabel Fisher won the BRITISH GRAVEL CHAMPIONSHIPS on another ASTR RS at the end of August this year.
Please note there are some aero gravel bags that are designed for this frame in the works that make it even quicker – seriously EVERY watt is accounted for!
Our take:
Buy the ASTR if you want to go VERY FAST on gravel, but please note the GEO is aggressive, if you want a fast gravel ride that’s less aggressive then the GRIFN or KANZO FAST may be a better choice for you!
Ridley’s take:
The ASTR is a performance gravel bike developed for modern gravel racing. Recently, these races have become increasingly rough, while riders are going faster than ever, leading to new demands on the bike.
The ASTR uses some aero-optimized features of it’s more expensive sibling. The ASTR keeps that confidence-inspiring geometry with a high degree of stability at high speed (longer wheelbase, slacker head angle, deeper BB). The large tire clearance allows fitting the tires required to handle rougher courses.
Riders need to be able to conserve more energy during the race: optimized aero, more comfort, less rolling resistance due to the wider tires, and better climbing performance due to the low weight mean racers will go into the final with more energy in the tank than their adversaries.
