Monster Tires, Nimble Ride
The WI.DE. (Winding Detours) targets bigger tires than the U.P. without compromising speed.
What is the WI.DE.?
1 |
With 650b gravel or 27.5″ mountain bike tires up to 2.4”(61mm), rutted singletrack, slippery roots and rocks disappear.
|
2 |
With 700c gravel tires up to 46mm, even the toughest gravel roads are tackled at lightning speed
|
3 |
Assembled with 700c road tires (we recommend 35-40mm wide), you have the most comfortable road bike ever invented.

Double-Drop Chainstay.
The U.P.’s dropped right chainstay launched a whole category of bikes. The WI.DE. doubles up.
The double-drop chainstays create a very efficient box-shape behind the BB. This increases stiffness, reduces weight and boosts tire clearance.
Tire Clearance.
Fitting the biggest tire into a bike with road geometry is our favorite puzzle!
1x cranks eliminate the inner ring and front derailleur that limit tire clearance. Most of our customers run a classic 1x setup with 12-sp or 13-sp cassette. But you can also go 2x using the Classified system: light, fast, very efficient and clean.
Speed & Handling.
Thanks to its efficient rider position, the WI.DE. is deceptively fast on-road despite its big tires. This always surprises test riders. Great fun on-road and no limits off-road.
Our carbon layup.
So many marketing claims about carbon. Yet the truth is quite simple.
Every bike company has access to the same carbon. Compared to industries like aviation, carbon volume for bikes is too small for custom or exclusive. So all those different names for proprietary carbon are just that, names.
What matters: high-modulus carbon is stiff but brittle, low modulus carbon is more flexible but tougher. You need stiff and tough, so the best layup is a blend and the ratio depends on what is most important in each area of the frame.
In some areas (main tubes for example), the blend has more high modulus (and even ultra-high modulus) carbon. Other areas (headtube for example) use more of the tough carbon. That’s how our frames are both light and durable.
U–Turn.
The U-Turn has tire clearance in abundance. It’s also very light, thanks to another OPEN innovation: Smartmount.
Standard, the bike industry uses four bolts plus an adaptor to attach the brake caliper to the fork. This allows for flipping between 140mm and 160mm rotors.
However, SRAM and Shimano both always recommend 160mm for the front, so we remove the adaptor and two bolts to attach the caliper directly onto the fork for that rotor size.
This makes the setup lighter, stiffer, safer. (Check our Specifications for the correct bolt lengths for each setup.)
This design also cleans up the U-Turn fork legs and allows us to make a very light structure with very tunable stiffness and strength.
„Stuff Carrying Capability”.
Extra bottle under the downtube and a toolbox under the BB. Ready for every Winding Detour.
The tool box mounts are off-center to create extra clearance to the chainring. If you don’t use a toolbox, you can mount a larger water bottle under the downtube.
Design is in the details.
Reviews & Awards
“Open continues to raise the bar on how far you can take a road bike off road and still have an agile, fast rolling, rollicking good ride. The WI.DE. blows the roof off tire size options & is impressive on technical singletrack, going further than the Open U.P. ever could. I cleared large boulders and even hopped fallen trees pretty easily.”
“Overall, the Open WI.DE. is pushing the boundaries of where we can take a drop-bar bike and what they shouldlook like. The crazy part is that, thanks to its aggressive geometry, it does an amazing job on the road, too.”
“Having been riding gravel bikes all week, it was immediately evident how much more confident the [WI.DE.] was on the challenging terrain. That’s partly down to the wider 2.4” tyres, but the geometry also seemed to play a part. The front end was lively, darting around rocks and through cracks but never in a way that disturbed the stability of the bike. The striking element of the WI.DE. though, was how much it still felt like a road bike.”
Love.”
“First impressions are… well, the WI.DE. is really amazing. I never thought that I’d want tires wider than 54 mm, but now I am riding with 24% more air.” Bicycle Quarterly video review.
“The WIDE feels planted and sure footed, it feels just so competent on any surface.”
“With the WI.DE., the Swiss two-man-gravel-brand presents a very powerful bike. The balanced handling, huge tire clearance, and numerous mounting points for mudguards, drinking bottles and bags make it the ideal platform. The high level of comfort and safety will appeal to gravel fans of all skill levels. This frameset could be a very solid base for your next multi-day adventure bike or sporty after-work fun-rig for technical terrain. And yes, bigger is better indeed!”

The WI.DE. runs classic 1x setups AND 2x setups with Classified hub. For serious gravel and off–road (on any brand of bike), we recommend a rear derailleur with a clutch or cage damper: any Shimano GRX, any SRAM AXS, any older SRAM 1x mechanical, Campagnolo Ekar)
All road cranks
All DUB road, Force 1 BB30
none, 1x drivetrain standard, 2x with Classified hub
Flat (for example Wolftooth)
General guidance: 46t (flat ring, not available in all sizes with all BCDs so check with your crank supplier), 42t (SRAM offset ring). Note: clearance depends on chainline & chainring. 2mm space is required so please verify.
In standard set-up: 38t (flat & offset rings). Smaller rings can work depending on cassette/rear derailleur/chain length setup
